women in paris

February 3, 2013

There are many things to be learned when traveling. While backpacking alone in my scrubby American clothes and stuffed-full backpack, one thing I did not expect to pick up was elegance. However, while observing the women in France I realized there is much to be learned from a Parisian woman.

-Feel beautiful, all the time. All around Paris, one can find elegant nightwear. Usually one to opt for sweats and a floppy t-shirt, I found the idea of making what you wear in private just as important as that in public a way of living I now wanted to follow. As a present to myself I picked up a night dress at princesse tam tam and have vowed to focus on feeling good about myself in all circumstances.

-Perfume is a personality. When a Parisian woman walks into a room, you can tell a lot about her by her scent. Although the smell is not as overpowering as the American men who take a shower in Axe body spray, they have an aura of smell around them that leaves you wanting more. They also have more specialized and unique scents, which I found another mark of personality.

-Let yourself appreciate a treat or two. Yes, Parisian women indulge in the occasional hot chocolate and croissant at Angelina’s. However, they enjoy it in that moment and don’t do it everyday. In America I feel women find it taboo to eat and enjoy the decadents of life. So instead they deprive themselves and then gorge privately into a whole bag of chips or a pint of ice cream, later making themselves feel awful for it. French women seem to do the opposite, and almost flaunt and smile at their decision that on that day they treated themselves to something wonderful.

-Natural is better. You don’t see many French women caked in makeup or with an orange tan or long fake nails. Instead, they seem to embrace their natural beauty. Hair is never flattened with a straight iron, but rather kept clean and healthy. Nails are plain and if colored at all, seem to vary in light pink hues. They seem to enjoy their original looks and use beauty tools only as a way to slightly enhance them.

It’s always a good idea to splurge just a little from time to time 😉
