creative mussels

June 19, 2012

After taking a class here, I soon learned how easy it is to make mussels. A big fan of seafood, I jump at the opportunity to make anything new. The great thing about mussels, is they don’t require just one set recipe to taste good. Any time I have made them, I come up with a new ‘creation’. This weekend I wanted to have a picnic to take advantage of the sunshine. So I whipped up these delicious mussels and enjoyed them on the water.

1. Rid all mussels of their ‘beards’, this is a huge step because it kills the mussel before cooking it.

2. After this, make sure your mussels are super clean before cooking.

3. Heat a pot on medium-high and add any of the ingredients you would like for flavor, we did:

  • parsley
  • cilantro
  • thyme
  • oregano
  • garlic
  • olive oil

4. After the aromas have mixed, add in the mussels.

5. Cover the mussels in water or a white wine.

6. Put on lid to let simmer.

Now comes the easy part. Mussels tell you when they are done cooking. Their shells open up! Once this is done, a lot of people enjoy the mussels and the broth with toasted baguettes.

I love mussels. they are super cheap and really easy to make. In terms of covering the mussels, you don’t even need to add that much liquid. Just a little liquid would provide enough steam to open them.

Mussels are a very popular dish and so easy to prepare. I agree with you…I just love seafood. Living in New England there is always a wonderful selection of fresh fish at the markets.
